I Must Have Wanton Poets
-Christopher Marlowe

I must have wanton poets, pleasant wits, Musicians, that with touching of a string May draw the pliant king which way I please: Music and poetry is his delight; Therefore I'll have Italian masks by night, Sweet speeches, comedies, and pleasing shows; And in the day, when he shall walk abroad, Like sylvan nymphs my pages shall be clad; My men, like satyrs grazing on the lawns, Shall with their goat-feet dance the antic hay; Sometime a lovely boy in Dian's shape, With hair that gilds the water as it glides, Crownets of pearl about his naked arms, And in his sportful hands an olive-tree, To hide those parts which men delight to see, Shall bathe him in a spring; and there, hard by, One like Action, peeping through the grove, Shall by the angry goddess be transform'd, And running in the likeness of an hart, By yelping hounds pull'd down, shall seem to die: Such things as these best please his majesty.

The sound quality on this recording is better than you'd expect of an audience(?) recording from 1968, but I wouldn't expect anything great if I were you.

The question marks are there because the audience noise is pretty distant.  The boomy vocals, however, make me doubtful that this is a board tape.

It's the performance that matters here.  This is a great band early in their long career & they definitely nailed it on this particular evening.  If you're a fan, you want this.  If you're not, this might change your mind.

Tears, Idle Tears
-Alfred Lord Tennyson

Tears, idle tears, I know not what they mean,
Tears from the depth of some divine despair
Rise in the heart, and gather to the eyes,
In looking on the happy Autumn-fields, And thinking of the days that are no more.

Fresh as the first beam glittering on a sail,
That brings our friends up from the underworld,
Sad as the last which reddens over one
That sinks with all we love below the verge;
So sad, so fresh, the days that are no more.

Ah, sad and strange as in dark summer dawns
The earliest pipe of half-awakened birds
To dying ears, when unto dying eyes
The casement slowly grows a glimmering square;
So sad, so strange, the days that are no more.

Dear as remembered kisses after death,
And sweet as those by hopeless fancy feigned
On lips that are for others; deep as love,
Deep as first love, and wild with all regret;
O Death in Life, the days that are no more.

Nothing to hide

Clearly an audience recording, but the sound is terrific, especially for 1974.  I know, I know, every time I praise the sound on an audience recording, someone (usually anonymous) takes it upon himself to tell me I'm wrong.  So be it.

The eighties were hard on guys like Stephen Stills.  The venue listed here is the "Zoo Amphitheater."  Help me out here, Oklahomans, was he actually playing at a zoo?  It reminds me of the scenes in This Is Spinal Tap when they play the amusement park and the airport hanger.

The difference being that the music here is very, very good... except when Mike Finnegan takes the microphone.  Those bits are... problematic.

My Favorite Thing
After Apple-Picking -Robert Frost My long two-pointed ladder's sticking through a tree Toward heaven still, And there's a barrel that I didn't fill Beside it, and there may be two or three Apples I didn't pick upon some bough. But I am done with apple-picking now. Essence of winter sleep is on the night, The scent of apples: I am drowsing off. I cannot rub the strangeness from my sight I got from looking through a pane of glass I skimmed this morning from the drinking trough And held against the world of hoary grass. It melted, and I let it fall and break. But I was well Upon my way to sleep before it fell, And I could tell What form my dreaming was about to take. Magnified apples appear and disappear, Stem end and blossom end, And every fleck of russet showing dear. My instep arch not only keeps the ache, It keeps the pressure of a ladder-round. I feel the ladder sway as the boughs bend. And I keep hearing from the cellar bin The rumbling sound Of load on load of apples coming in. For I have had too much Of apple-picking: I am overtired Of the great harvest I myself desired. There were ten thousand thousand fruit to touch, Cherish in hand, lift down, and not let fall. For all That struck the earth, No matter if not bruised or spiked with stubble, Went surely to the cider-apple heap As of no worth. One can see what will trouble This sleep of mine, whatever sleep it is. Were he not gone, The woodchuck could say whether it's like his Long sleep, as I describe its coming on, Or just some human sleep.
Maybe you know Billy Talbot as the bassist for Crazy Horse.  Maybe you know Crazy Horse's albums without Neil Young, some of which include songs written and/or sung by Talbot.  Maybe you've heard those '84 Neil Young stealth shows during which Talbot does a bit of singing lead.  Did you know, however, that he put out a solo album in 2004?  I think it's still in print.  I know it's good.

If you're looking for a long lost Neil Young album, you'll be disappointed.  The sound is a little closer to the first and fourth Crazy Horse albums, but far more laid back and moody.

Here's the only Billy Talbot boot I've ever found.  He performs most of that solo album well before he recorded it.  Again, if you're looking for Neil Young, you'll be disappointed.  Taken on its own, I think it's pretty darn good.

One More Saturday Night
The Cruel Maid
by Robert Herrick

AND cruel maid, because I see
You scornful of my love and me,
I’ll trouble you no more ; but go
My way where you shall never know.
What is become of me : there I
Will find me out a path to die,
Or learn some way how to forget
You and your name for ever : yet,
Ere I go hence, know this from me,
What will, in time, your fortune be :
This to your coyness I will tell,
And, having spoke it once, farewell.
The lily will not long endure,
Nor the snow continue pure ;
The rose, the violet, one day
See both these lady-flowers decay :
And you must fade as well as they.
And it may chance that love may turn,
And, like to mine, make your heart burn
And weep to see’t ; yet this thing do,
That my last vow commends to you :
When you shall see that I am dead,
For pity let a tear be shed
And, with your mantle o’er me cast,
Give my cold lips a kiss at last :
If twice you kiss you need not fear
That I shall stir or live more here.
Next, hollow out a tomb to cover
Me—me, the most despisèd lover,
And write thereon : This, reader, know :
Love kill’d this man. No more, but so.

Some music brings back very specific memories.  As I played this disc for the first time in a couple of years, it brought back an afternoon over 20 years ago.  I was in bed with a new girlfriend, and she had a Bruce Cockburn mix playing in the background.  I'd only heard his more recent (at that time) music, but she was into his earlier, more acoustic stuff.  She's gone now, but I still have that afternoon... and this show.

A little more Cockburn to come this week.

Unless I give them money, Rapidshare is going to delete all those old links.  Dig through the archives and grab what you can now, because I ain't giving them a cent.

Note, this only applies to old stuff; I haven't used Rapidshare in a long time.

Got a very nice request for the Dublin, Vienna, or Winnipeg shows from Neil Young's 1996 tour.  As it turns out, I don't think I have any of those.  I'll keep looking; the Infinite Warehouse is a big place.  In the meantime, here's one I was at that year.  You're not reading the setlist wrong, they did play "Cinnamon Girl" twice in a row.  That's a full band, electric version of "Pocahontas".  The sound is only OK, but the performance is fantastic.
